   Admission Requirements

Programme Minimum Requirements

Master’s

  • Coursework only
  • Coursework & Research
A Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent in the related field*
Dissertation only A Bachelor’s Degree (Hons.) or its equivalent in the related field*
PhD A Master’s Degree or its equivalent in the related field*
   
  * Note:
     i . Preference will be given to applicants having a Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA 
       3.0 and above or its equivalent.

   ii . Applicants having a Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA 3.7 and above can apply 
        directly for the PhD programme.
   
 
Semester Intake
 
2. How many intakes a year are there in your University and when can I start applying?

There are  two semesters  a year. Semester  1 of the academic year commences in early September while Semester 2 commences in early February. All academic programmes are offered in Semester 1 but only a selected number of academic programmes are offered in Semester 2.  You may check the advertisement in our University Malaya website for the programmes offered and the deadlines to apply. You can apply any time throughout the year for research programmes except for those with pre-requisite courses.

   
 
Programme Duration
 
3. How much time do I need to complete my studies?

The length of time required for the completion of a programme depends on the mode and the type of programme, and on the progress of the individual candidate. In general, the minimum, maximum and average durations are as follows:

Average 4 semesters 4 years 6 semesters
 

*Average semesters are the length of time when candidates usually completed their programmes.

   
 
Mode of Study
 
4. What are the modes of study for the programmes?
There are 4 modes of study for postgraduate programmes in UM:
 
Coursework only Students are required to acquire a specified number of coursework credits. Certain coursework programmes may require the submission of a research report.
Clinical Coursework Students are required to complete coursework credits and be involved in clinical work.
Coursework and Research (Mixed-mode) Students are required to complete coursework credits and to submit a dissertation.
Research only (Dissertation/Thesis) Research is the principal requirement for attaining a higher degree. Students may be required to attend some pre-requisite courses as prescribed by the University.
   
 
Language Requirements (For International Students)
 
The University of Malaya expects all postgraduate candidates to be proficient in the English language.

1. ENTRY REQUIREMENT for International Candidates Writing Thesis/Dissertation in English:

   (i) A band 6 for IELTS; or 

   (ii) A score of 550 paper based total, a score of 213 for computer-based total or a  
         score of 80 for internet-based total for TOEFL.

   (iii) Without IELTS and TOEFL: Candidates must attend and pass the English 
          Language Course conducted by University of Malaya Centre for Continuous 
          Education (UMCCeD) at the level stipulated by the university. For details  
          please contact umcced@um.edu.my.

   However different entry requirements are imposed by:

  • Faculty of Law, the minimum English requirement is Band 7 for IELTS or a score of 600 for TOEFL,
  • For the Master of English as a Second Language (MESL) programme by the Faculty of languages & Linguistics, the minimum English requirement is Band 6.5 for IELTS or a score of 600 for TOEFL.
  • ATTENTION: For both requirements above, candidate MAY NOT opt for the English Language Course conducted by University of Malaya Centre for Continuous Education (UMCCeD).
 
2. EXIT REQUIREMENT for International candidates following courses and or writing
     thesis/dissertation in other language EXCEPT English:
  1. A band 5 for IELTS; or
  2. TOEFL 500  -  549
  3. Without IELTS and TOEFL: Candidates must attend and pass the English Language Course conducted by University of Malaya Centre for Continuous Education (UMCCeD) at the level stipulated by the university. For details please contact umcced@um.edu.my.

6. How can I apply ?
Applications must be submitted online at www.ips.um.edu.my > Apply Online
Application details are advertised in the local newspapers in May for the September intake and in November for February intake. Application for research programmes is throughout the year with the exception of programmes with prerequisite courses.

(a) Once all the online procedure been completed, kindly press “ Click To Confirm    
      Application” button to get the complete application form and Cover Letter. Please 
      keep the documents for your own record.


(b) You are not allowed to edit your on-line application after pressing “Click To 
      Confirm Application” button.


(c) You may check your application status through on-line, two months after the date 
      of your application.

7. Is there any financial assistance available to Postgraduate Students?
Yes, but competition is very keen. You are advised to secure your own resourcess for your study. Nevertheless, you can apply to the following for financial assistance.
  (1) The University of Malaya
  For Local Students – University of Malaya Fellowship Scheme, Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund, Fellowship Scheme, Tuanku Pro-Chancellor Scholarship, Postgraduate Research Grant (PPP), Graduate Research Assistantship Scheme (GRAS) and Fee Reduction Scheme for the Handicapped and Senior Citizens.
   
  For International Students - Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders’ Fellowship Fund and Graduate Research Assistantship Scheme (GRAS)
